1/1/11 Key Largo!!!

Sunset at Key Largo
It is Jan 1, 2011 (1/1/11 when will we get to write that date again?) and we have finally made it to Key Largo and (hopefully) to pleasant weather. It was not an easy trip.

Lake Okeechobee
Pelican up a tree

Shortly after my last post to the blog on Tuesday, Dec 28th, I came down with the stomach flu the likes of which I have not experienced since I was a youngster. I pretty much threw up all night and then collapsed into bed the entire next day. I was not able to function until Thursday. We drove down to Lake Okeechobee that day. That evening, Pats came down with the same bug and she spent the night just like I did two nights earlier. She crashed until almost noon and then she said she thought she could sleep while I drove on south, so we pushed on. We pulled over fairly early in the afternoon into the parking lot of the Miccosukee Indian Casino and Bingo Palace. (RVs park for free!) It was noisy, but we were off the road and both of us could crash. It turned out they served a killer chicken noodle soup, which both Pats and I took little sips of with great relish. After a noisy night, we both felt a bit better the next morning. Key Largo was just 50 miles away and we were ready to be off the road.

Hangin out at Kings Kamp

We are staying in an established RV park called Kings Kamp. It has some 80 or so sites, most of them permanent, and only a handful of transient sites for the likes of us. Our site is narrow, hemmed in by our neighbors, but it is steps from the waters of Florida Bay. There is a small beach, pier and boat dock. There are great views of the bay and wonderful sunsets. Everyone seems friendly.

We have erected Paddy O’Room and have started to unpack our summer clothes and put away the winter coats. Mostly we work a little and then take a rest for a while, still recovering from the flu. We are going to visit the tourist info bureau tomorrow to see what adventures are in store for us once we regain our constitutions.
